How to Soundproof a Floor

The key to soundproofing floors in a residence is to first force the disconnection between upstairs and down. This is accomplished by either raising your existing subfloor or adding a new layer of flooring.

Additionally, you can use Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound to seal flooring panels, utilize an acoustic floor underlayment to short circuit the impact noise, install a floor soundproofing system during construction, and install Iso-Step® Acoustic Floor Underlayment to improve IIC ratings and STC.

Prep work is also necessary for wood and concrete substrates. Lastly, for floating floor systems, perimeter isolation strip must be installed and for nail down hardwood flooring, a raft method must be used.
