Door Slamming! What to do?

Here's the scenario. You have a neighbor that is constantly slamming the door at all hours of the day and night. What kind of person slams the door? Some how, I can go through life without slamming doors, so I expect other people to do the same. However, even though I have asked my neighbor nicely to stop slamming their door, they continue. It's a mother and three boys. I will not escalate the complaint because I would rather be on friendly terms with my neighbors.

Kids and teens, they make excellent door slammers. The adult door slammer, who knows what their problem is. Take for instance my neighbor, he seems a little mental. Luckily, he is gone most of the year, so I will not confront him regarding his door slamming habits.

So, what to do! Here is a guide from Nolo Law on how to approach neighbors. It starts by first verbally talking to your neighbor all the way to suing your neighbor for nuisance. That article can be found here. Follow these steps from Nolo and never confront your neighbor when you are angry or you might end up in a bad situation like this or even worse Man Kills neighbor Over Slamming Door.

Maybe your neighbors need a little help, so here are some products that they can use:

I have decided to try to reduce the problem by soundproofing my door. I will let you know how it goes.

  1. THANK YOU! I am the neighbor that slams the door. I don't mean to, but they are just really heavy, and sometimes they just slam. I've tried really hard to close them quietly, but some of them won't shut if you don't slam them hard. My neighbor mentioned something to me and I felt awful. I've been searing the web for the past hour looking for products that would help, now I found some!

  2. I am living next door to a door slammer. The neighbors, for what I can tell, are mad and unruly. Recently, I saw a letter they had left around showing that they are delinquent on a number of bills, that they had taken out a number of bad loans, and were car flipping -- that is, taking loans out on cars and trying to sell them. I have seen them loitering around BMWs and new "hot" cars which they drive out of the parking lot like a bat out of hell. The tenants run up and down the stairs, slam into people they happen to be passing, and then slam the door in and out.

By and large, I would say that people choose how to act. I make a point to shut a door gently -- out of consideration for others. Others make a point to slam doors, perhaps to be heard or to vent their frustration - or because they are simply so oblivious to others around them -- or enjoy the stress they inflict on others.

My resident door slammer appears to be engaged in illegal/criminal activity -- and usually anti-social behavior begets other anti-social behavior. As far as I can tell, they are a bunch of unruly punks. When the door slamming is brought to their attention, they laugh and mock the person who brings the door slamming to their attention.

Everyone else is quiet and courteous -- people in this unit just seem nuts.

  3. Thank YOU so much for this tip. I live on the middle floor of a condo and the person above me is heavy footed and the people below me are consistent door slammers. I really like them and am afraid to mention anything to them because they are good neighbors and good people. So I just had this thought to post an anonymous letter on the bulletin board in the lobby. Helpful tips for preventing door slamming! They won't know who it came from, but at least in will be in their heads when they see it.
