Door Slamming! What to do?

Here's the scenario. You have a neighbor that is constantly slamming the door at all hours of the day and night. What kind of person slams the door? Some how, I can go through life without slamming doors, so I expect other people to do the same. However, even though I have asked my neighbor nicely to stop slamming their door, they continue. It's a mother and three boys. I will not escalate the complaint because I would rather be on friendly terms with my neighbors.

Kids and teens, they make excellent door slammers. The adult door slammer, who knows what their problem is. Take for instance my neighbor, he seems a little mental. Luckily, he is gone most of the year, so I will not confront him regarding his door slamming habits.

So, what to do! Here is a guide from Nolo Law on how to approach neighbors. It starts by first verbally talking to your neighbor all the way to suing your neighbor for nuisance. That article can be found here. Follow these steps from Nolo and never confront your neighbor when you are angry or you might end up in a bad situation like this or even worse Man Kills neighbor Over Slamming Door.

Maybe your neighbors need a little help, so here are some products that they can use:

I have decided to try to reduce the problem by soundproofing my door. I will let you know how it goes.

  1. THANK YOU! I am the neighbor that slams the door. I don't mean to, but they are just really heavy, and sometimes they just slam. I've tried really hard to close them quietly, but some of them won't shut if you don't slam them hard. My neighbor mentioned something to me and I felt awful. I've been searing the web for the past hour looking for products that would help, now I found some!

I am living next door to a door slammer. The neighbors, for what I can tell, are mad and unruly. Recently, I saw a letter they had left around showing that they are delinquent on a number of bills, that they had taken out a number of bad loans, and were car flipping -- that is, taking loans out on cars and trying to sell them. I have seen them loitering around BMWs and new "hot" cars which they drive out of the parking lot like a bat out of hell. The tenants run up and down the stairs, slam into people they happen to be passing, and then slam the door in and out.

By and large, I would say that people choose how to act. I make a point to shut a door gently -- out of consideration for others. Others make a point to slam doors, perhaps to be heard or to vent their frustration - or because they are simply so oblivious to others around them -- or enjoy the stress they inflict on others.

My resident door slammer appears to be engaged in illegal/criminal activity -- and usually anti-social behavior begets other anti-social behavior. As far as I can tell, they are a bunch of unruly punks. When the door slamming is brought to their attention, they laugh and mock the person who brings the door slamming to their attention.

Everyone else is quiet and courteous -- people in this unit just seem nuts.

You sound like a horrible person to live near. "Recently, I was reading other people's mail..."

Thank YOU so much for this tip. I live on the middle floor of a condo and the person above me is heavy footed and the people below me are consistent door slammers. I really like them and am afraid to mention anything to them because they are good neighbors and good people. So I just had this thought to post an anonymous letter on the bulletin board in the lobby. Helpful tips for preventing door slamming! They won't know who it came from, but at least in will be in their heads when they see it.

I doubt it. If they are oblivious enough to slam doors, they'll be oblivious to the bulletin message, especially if no one tells them there door-slamming is annoying. HINTING DOES NOT WORK.

Anyone have tips on how to get your family members to stop slamming the door ? Indeed it is a light weight door so easily tossed shut but the slamming jars the entire house.

My husband is a chronic door slammer. Despite stuff falling off the walls and shelves, despite me asking him to stop and even putting notes on the door to remind him he continues to slam. When he is laid off this can be 40 times a day. It makes me CRAZY!

  7. I have the same problem, my neighbors are very nice and usually quiet but they don't just slam the front door if the house, they also slam car doors. By far the loudest is that they let their car door handle slap every time, like when your door is locked and you let the handle slap to inform the driver that your door is locked. I don't see how they dont realize how loud they are, opening a car door and letting the handle slap is very loud and has to be on purpose because it's not natural to open a handle that way. I think most people are just psychopaths, they have no care for anybody else aside from themselves. It's purely a lack of empathy, my bedroom is right next to the parking lot for our duplex and the window might as well be open because it has no insulation value whatsoever, I'm thinking I might just put a better window in. Dont worry about me psychopaths, I'll go out of my way because of something unnatural you do. And to the lady who said that some doors need slammed, NO THEY DON'T!! If a door is hard to shut, have it fixed or PUSH IT SLOWLY WITH MORE WEIGHT!!!! Slamming is no easier than pushing it shut with your body weight, it will still make a little noise but not as bad as slamming.

I am dealing with a family who lives in the apartment next door who cannot simply close the door, they must slam it shut every time.

I am changing the name off my wireless router to "PleaseStopSlammingYourDoor".

Passive agressive I know, but hopefully they get the message.

I have to say, I have neighbors like you do and we have talked to them. Funny thing is what I get out of the mothers mouth are lies or fabrications. She lives below us and has teenagers and a pregnant girlfriend of her sons in a tiny 2 bedroom apartment. They make sure we are disrupted and they don't care if they keep my husband up or our other neighbor at night. (They both work long hours and have to get up early.) I have caught her on occasions trying to be sneaky and have called her on them. I believe she is mentally a child herself. We of course are now working at getting out of apartment living. I hate living above 5-6 people who are that inconsiderate. Yes we have gone to the management company and they have done nothing. I'm over it as well as my husband and our other neighbor. I don't trust them because they are vengeful people. No matter how you slice it, Not everyone was raised the same.

I think it's mostly obliviousness, and the satisfaction taken from bothering the neighbors they don't like. My door-slammer also has a parrot, and laughs very loud and VERY boisterously. To top it, I really don't get along with them, although they seem like good natured kids. So after asking them to stop slamming, they continued. I began to play loud music every time until they slammed on their ceiling. Our floors/ceilings are paper thin, so we know we can hear each other speak even in a normal talking level. I turned the music off entirely and ended up loudly saying (not yelling) through the floor "You slam your door, I play my music loud" Thank god I live in a mountain town, lol. If I would have tried that back in Dallas, I might have gotten shot :P. I need to move out of here if these guys stay, and I suggest everyone else doing the same if it bothers them as much as it does for me. Who knows what kind of long term harm/regret that may come from acting irrationally as I did.

Yep I have the same problem with roommates. They always have to pull doors shut without turning the handle, the toilet gets used and the lid gets dropped, shut a sliding door to their bedroom and boom!,
There are times I just want to take a hot iron and run it across their faces.
On top of this they always have tv up loud, they talk loud, they yell at their dogs in sentences thinking the dogs know what they are saying.
THAT SETTLES IT I WILL TAKE THEM ALL OUT RIGHT NOW !

OMG. I know how you feel. I live in an apartment right next door to an ignorant, oblivious, door slammer, and it's a living hell. I've already told her her constant door slamming disrupts my sleep and studying, but she still does it every time she comes in, which is once every 15 minutes. It drives me absolutely insane, and I can't wait until my lease is over. (SIGH)
