Soundproofing Condos, Good For The Environment?

In the article "New Approaches to Quiet Buildings Can Help Address Climate Change" by Kevin Surace, he writes that less resources are used by individuals living in the city. City dwellers are usually closer to their jobs and tend use more public transportation. Also, there is an advantage to people living in condos. Condos require less resources to build and use less resources to heat and cool. To get people into these condos, the most common complaint will have to be addressed, noise from your neighbors and the street. Kevin points out some of the new technologies for soundproofing. You can read the article at Multi-Housing News.

Kevin Surace is the CEO of Serious Materials. Here is some more information about the company from their Press Release. You will also find it interesting that Quiet Solutions is a Serious Materials Company.

"Serious Materials develops and manufactures sustainable green building materials that considerably reduce the impact of the 'built environment' on the climate. EcoRock™, coming in 2008, is an eco-friendly drywall that uses virtually zero energy in its core production, resulting in zero CO2 emissions. This gives it the lowest carbon footprint of any drywall product by an order of magnitude, making it especially well-suited for sustainable development and LEED projects. Quiet Solution, a division of Serious Materials, makes 25 Quiet®-brand soundproofing products that enhance livability and encourage sustainable land use such as urban infill and quality of life. Serious Materials has 22 patents pending. The company’s environmentally friendly products are manufactured in multiple plants in the United States and widely available through building products dealers in the U.S. and Canada.

Soundproofing on a budget

I came across another one of Dr. Bob's soundproofing articles. He writes about doing soundproofing on a budget. You can use sand for soundproofing your walls, they have to to be reinforced. You can also used rolled roofing material in place of MLV ( Mass Loaded Vinyl ).  You can read the full article here.
